In The Making is an artist spotlight that is catered to talented and motivated individuals to increase the awareness of their name and product. Our first artist is Scrilla, a music producer. See the interview below.
Name?
Scrilla
Occupation (Artist, songwriter, producer, etc)?
Producer
Where are you from?
Worcester, Massachusetts
How long have you been producing?
I've been making music my whole life, but have only been producing hip hop tracks
for about 2 maybe 2 and a half years now.
Who are your influences?
Wow, there's really way too many to name since I listen to all types of music, but as far as hip hop goes, I grew up on Naughty By Nature, Snoop, Dre, artists like that so I guess Kay Gee and Dre were some of the first recognizable producers to me.
What inspires you to create music?
Really everything inspires me. Could be a song I hear on the radio that I wanted to sample or a melody that popped into my head or just the mood I'm in at the moment. I'm always inspired to make music.
What is the creative process when making a beat?
It's not always the same for me. Sometimes I'll listen to a sample and already know exactly how I want the beat to sound in my head. Other times I might just chop up certain sounds I like and arrange them over the drums. And then there's times where I'll just mess around with a certain instrument and come up with a nice melody and build on that.
How did you get into sampling?
Sampling to me is like the soul of hip hop. It was taking something old and recycling it into something new and different. Thats what hip hop was when I was growing up. I still love hearing the originals and seeing all the different ways producers will chop their samples up. I have a musical background, so I do a little of both, but sampling is definately my favorite.
What goes into your decision when choosing a sampling?
Every song I hear I break down and analyze in my head. What I like about it and what I don't. I might pick up certain sounds I like or even a loop I want to use. There's a certain style of music that you could probably recognize in a lot of my tracks, but overall I'm pretty eclectic in my samples and you'll hear a good variety of genres.
I believe in the saying its not the equipment, but its how you use it that makes the equipment great. What equipment do you use for porduction?
Couldn't agree more! I use Fruity Loops.
Are you currently working on any projects? If so, what are they?
I'm hoping to start work very soon on my mixtape called Wasted Talent. I'm hoping to have it finished by Summer. So be on the lookout for that. Should feature a good variety of talent from all over.
What's next for Scrilla?
Only time will tell, but I'm hoping for good things in 09.
peace II
